Neuro Intervention Overview

Neurointervention, also known as interventional neuroradiology or endovascular neurosurgery, is a medical specialty that focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the blood vessels and structures within the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Neurointerventional procedures are minimally invasive and are performed using image guidance techniques, such as fluoroscopy or angiography.

Neurointerventional techniques involve accessing the blood vessels through small incisions or catheter-based approaches, which significantly reduce the need for open surgery. The procedures are typically performed by neurointerventional radiologists or neurosurgeons who have specialized training in this field.

Neurointerventional procedures have revolutionized the treatment of many neurovascular conditions, offering less invasive alternatives to traditional open surgery. These procedures often result in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and reduced risks compared to conventional surgical approaches. Endovascular Coiling

This procedure is used to treat cerebral aneurysms, which are abnormal bulges or weak areas in the blood vessels of the brain. During coiling, a catheter is threaded through the blood vessels to the site of the aneurysm, and tiny platinum coils are inserted to promote blood clotting and prevent rupture.

Mechanical Thrombectomy

Mechanical thrombectomy is a procedure used to remove blood clots from the blood vessels supplying the brain in cases of acute ischemic stroke. It involves using specialized devices, such as stent retrievers or aspiration catheters, to physically remove the clot and restore blood flow to the affected area of the brain.

Angioplasty & Stenting

Angioplasty and stenting are commonly performed to treat narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels in the brain, a condition known as intracranial stenosis. During angioplasty, a catheter with a deflated balloon at its tip is used to widen the narrowed vessel. In some cases, a stent—a small metal mesh tube—is placed to help keep the blood vessel open.

Embolization

Embolization is a procedure used to treat vascular malformations and tumors in the brain. It involves injecting substances, such as tiny particles or liquid embolic agents, into the blood vessels to block or reduce blood flow to the abnormal growth, leading to its shrinkage or elimination.

Diagnostic Angiography

Diagnostic angiography is performed to visualize the blood vessels in the brain and identify abnormalities or diseases. A contrast dye is injected into the blood vessels, and X-ray images are taken to obtain detailed information about the blood flow and anatomy of the vessels.
